Howzit!
Yesterday was a big one – me and Belinda celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary! 🎉 To celebrate, we decided to head out to Bowen Island for brunch. 🍳🥂 Sitting there, taking in the stunning views with my incredible wife, I couldn’t help but feel so thankful. Thankful for this amazing and beautiful woman who’s been my partner for the last 20 years, for the journey we’ve been on, and for the life we are building in this amazing country. 🇨🇦
We’ve been in Vancouver for four years now, and – crazy as it sounds – this was our first trip to Bowen Island! It reminded me how easy it is to get caught up in the day-to-day grind. Immigration isn’t a walk in the park. Leaving behind everything you know and starting fresh halfway across the world is tough. The cost of living, the weather, missing the people back home – it can all feel a bit overwhelming at times.
But moments like yesterday remind me to shift focus. This country is amazing – from its natural beauty to the safety and opportunities it offers. Sometimes, you just have to step outside, try something new, and remind yourself of all the good things. Sitting at home and dwelling on the hard stuff doesn’t help. What does? Getting out and experiencing what’s around you.
So, my challenge to all of us this week: let’s take a moment to look at what we’re grateful for. Whether it’s going for a walk, visiting a new spot, or just appreciating the small joys in life, go out and soak it in. There’s so much to love if we’re open to seeing it.

Be the Connection Someone Needs This Holiday Season
The holidays can be tough for newcomers. If it’s your first Christmas away from home, the distance from family and friends can feel even bigger. ❤️ But that’s where our amazing community steps in.
We’re kicking off a Holiday Host Connection, inspired by a great idea from Madeleine Herholdt (thanks, Madeleine! 🙏). It’s a simple way to bring people together – whether you’re new to Vancouver and looking for a friendly face or you’ve been here a while and want to help someone feel more at home.
Here’s how it works:
If you’re new to Vancouver, send an email to [email protected] and let us know where you live and a little about yourself.
If you’ve been here longer and are happy to be a host – whether that’s grabbing a coffee, sharing some tips about the city, or just being someone to chat to – email [email protected] too.
We’ll match people up by area to make connecting easy. It’s not formal – just a chance to meet someone new, have a chat, and make the holidays brighter. 🌟
Newcomers get a friendly face and a little less loneliness, while those who’ve been here longer get the chance to give back and do something meaningful for the community. 💕 Know someone who might want to join? Forward this email and get them involved!.
Let’s make this holiday season one to remember – for all the right reasons. 🎅

A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Incredible Volunteers!
With the holidays around the corner, it’s the perfect time to reflect on what we’re thankful for – and that includes the incredible people who make a real difference in our community. 💖
Lois Webber, our COO at the South African Institute of Canada, shared this heartfelt message:
A big shout-out to The South African Institute of Canada Volunteer Team!
Your hard work and selfless contributions are at the heart of everything we do, and we truly couldn’t achieve the impact we have without your support.
Karmen Cloete, thank you for being such a support in helping me personally set up all the daily operational admin. You’re hardworking, a jack of all trades, and never shy away from a challenge – you tackle everything with that South African spunk and resilience we all admire!
Taneeth Lambi, your heart for what we do and your creative passion for design have been a huge benefit to our organization. We’re so excited to collaborate with you as we build SAIC’s brand together.
Braam Geldenhuys, we’d be lost without your expertise in health and safety. Your advice has been invaluable, and we’re excited to have you on this community-focused journey.
Jyoti Singh, your NPO events coordinating experience has been a godsend. Your knowledge and heart for our community are tremendous assets, and we can’t wait to plan more events and fundraisers with you.
Susan King, your creative design talents and excitement for community events inspire us to continue bringing the South African community together. You remind us that no one should ever feel alone.
Madeleine Herholdt, “Ons Moederhen.” Brainstorming with you this week reminded me just how much you care about our Vancouver SA community. Your emotional connection and wisdom are priceless. We couldn’t do this without you!
To each and every one of you – please know that all your efforts are seen and deeply appreciated. You are a vital part of our community, and the positive change we’re creating together is a direct result of your hard work and generosity
Thank you again for all that you do!
– Lois (COO)
And of course, a huge thank you to Lois herself – not just for sharing these words, but for being the driving force behind everything we do. 🚀 Her leadership, dedication, and endless energy are the reason the South African Institute of Canada is taking shape. Without her, none of this would be happening.
